Why file size matters
On online stores and social feeds, heavy images slow down page loads, and even a couple of extra seconds can push visitors to bounce. For sellers uploading photos to a marketplace or their own storefront, staying under a file-size limit is often a hard technical requirement, not just a nice-to-have.
How JPEG compression works
JPEG uses "lossy" compression: the image is split into small blocks, and detail the human eye barely notices gets discarded. The lower the quality number, the more gets thrown away and the smaller the file — but in the 75–90 range, the quality loss is usually next to invisible.
