What's the engine behind this?

This page runs on Gifsicle — the well-known command-line tool that's been the industry standard for GIF optimization for years, this time compiled to WebAssembly and running entirely in your browser.

What does "lossy" mean here?

The quality slider controls how much distortion is allowed in the LZW compression — the lower the number (more aggressive compression), the smaller the file, but the more likely you are to see noise in flat, uniform colors. For most web GIFs, 70–85 is a good balance.

Does the animation survive?

Yes — unlike JPEG/PNG, which are single-frame, GIF can be multi-frame/animated, and Gifsicle works directly on the file structure rather than one frame's pixels — so frame count, timing between frames, and the loop count all stay intact.

How to use it
